Laura Carmichael returns to the Bay Area for a visit from Amsterdam, where she has been living for the past year, studying bass clarinet with Harry Sparnaay, Karnatic music with Raphael Rena, performing and investigating the Dutch new music scene.

She will perform her new solo program featuring original works with electronics and text, improvisations based on Sephardic musical sources, and music by contemporary Dutch and American composers.  She will also perform here in San Francisco at Meridian Gallery on the 8th of September, then in Southern California at Cal Arts, Northern Arizona State University and University of Texas at Austin, where she will also give master classes.  In November she makes her New York debut at Merkin Recital Hall, sponsored by the League of Composers and the International Society for Contemporary Music.

Please join Laura for this new program of adventurous, original and personal music.  Now is your chance to hear what she has been up to, since she will return to Amsterdam in the following season to work with the Dutch modern dance company Chriztina de Chatel Dance Group and choreographer Dylan Newcomb.  The company's new work for six musicians and six dancers will tour 30 cities next year, and will incorporate music composition, improvisation, text, and movement.

In the Bay Area she has performed in a wide range of settings, including performing with several orchestras, and ensembles such as the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Left Coast Ensemble, and John Schott's Diaglossia.  Many Bay Area residents know her as the leader of Alternate Currents.  With Alternate Currents, she has held a residency at ODC/SF Theater, received awards and grants from the Copland Foundation, Zellerbach Family Fund and Chamber Music America, and performed throughout the Bay Area.
